This unit covers the historical period in France from the ancien regime to the start of the Second World War. The module will be taught and assessed in English. This unit is the Beginners' Pathway version of the existing post-A level Level 1 French Studies BA (Hons) core module Understanding Modern France I. Year 2 students of Intermediate French taking the Beginners' French pathway will join post-A level students of French on FRE117 Understanding Modern France I. For the Post A level cohort on FRE117 primary source materials will be in French. Students on the Beginners' French pathway will be able to access the same texts in translation and will also be encouraged to familiarise themselves with the material in the French original.
